Hello Wonderful Families,
Thanks to all of you who attended student led conferences. It was great to see all the students share their work and be proud of what they have accomplished so far. I have typed their goals for the next semester and will be giving them to each student to keep near to remind them what they are shooting for. Here's what we have been doing since we spoke at conferences:
MATH: We started Unit 3 the other day, which is mostly focused on fractions. We will be covering this unit until Thanksgiving and taking the Unit 3 assessment sometime in the early part of December.(I will send home a review for the students to study from). I am also hoping to do some type of fraction Thanksgiving activity next week for some fun learning about these challenging concepts. We also have been playing some fraction match games to learn about equivalent fractions.
WRITING: We are wrapping up our first unit on Realistic Fiction. We will be having a Writing Celebration-tomorrow, November 19th. I am bringing glow sticks, blankets and popcorn in so we can have a blanket fort, shared reading celebration. It should be Fun! We will take a post assessment on Wednesday to confirm our learning.
Our next unit will be Personal essays, which I will introduce later this week and we will start brainstorming early next week. We will focus on this until after the holidays. Essay writing is a main focus in 4h grade and is a required element on the Maine standardized tests. The students have a great time creating a personal essay as a "gift". We will then move on to persuasive essays after the new year.
READING: We are also finishing up our first reading unit on Characters and realistic fiction. We will be taking this assessment on Thursday this week after reviewing for it on Wednesday. The students have really enjoyed our read aloud Tiger Rising, which we have used as a mentor text. Our next unit(which we will start after Thanksgiving) will be Non fiction and delving into Natural Disasters.
A FEW THINGS TO SHARE:
Winter Clothing: The weather has definitely turned and we are experiencing cold winds on the back playground. I try to take the students outside each morning for a break(as long as it's not raining and it is above 20 degrees) This means that they should be bringing(and wearing) proper winter clothing-coats, hats, mittens/gloves. If you send it with your child, they will be wearing it. When it snows, snow pants and boots are a good idea.
Wed. 11/20/19-Morning Assembly-We will be having a morning assembly from 8:55-9:20.
Check out the website for new pictures of our students making an electrical circuit last Friday during science. We have been focusing on Transfer of Energy and the students discovered how this happens in real life last week!
Wed. 11/27/19-EARLY RELEASE DAY/DAY OF GIVING:
Students will be dismissed at 12:30 pm. There will be several activities throughout the morning for students to help others. If your student will be absent that day, please email me to let me know.
Thurs. 11/28-Fri. 11/29-Thanksgiving Recess-No School
Thank you so much for your continued support. These are a wonderful group of children who I am enjoying getting to know each and every day. I hope that you and your families have a fantastic Thanksgiving Holiday. As always if you have a concern or need to speak with me, feel free to email or call me.
Tracy
