Hello Everyone,
January was a looong month but we got through it! Now on to February and lots of fun to be had! Hope you had fun watching the SuperBowl yesterday. We have lots going on-especially in the next couple of weeks before winter break, so here's an update!
MATH:
In math we are currently working on fractions and decimals in Unit 5. We just recently finished taking the Unit 4 assessment and the mid year assessment. These grades are used in determining report card grades. We will take the Unit 5 assessment on Thurs. 2/13 so we won't forget key skills while on vacation.
WRITING:
In writing we are working on persuasive essays. We have the format from writing our personal essays before the holidays, now we are trying to convince an audience of something. We will turn these into persuasive speeches or "CRES Chats"-think TED Talks. Some students will be filmed with their choice of slides and we will have a unbiased party choose their favorite which will be put on youtube! More on that to come! We are also working hard on an school wide assembly that we will be hosting on Wed. Feb 12th at 9 am. The kids are brainstorming ideas to present--the popular favorite is the "History of Valentine's Day". We'll keep you up to date on the final verdict. Up next after February break we will begin our Historical Fiction unit and be studying and writing about the American Revolution!
READING:
For our reading unit we are studying all types of extreme weather events(think: tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, floods etc.) and learning how to research and then present the information to our peers. This is a high level, but very important skill set that your student is learning--it will carry them far into the future. From this research groups of students will create a "product" of their choice, a video, a board game, a poster or a virtual poster or a Google slideshow to share with the class about their weather event. Students created the grading rubric with their peers on how it will be graded and what elements it needed to have in it. We will presenting these next week in class.
In Science we have been studying about energy-both potential and kinetic. We did some experiments with cars and ramps and we designed and made our own roller coasters! It was interesting to see what types of engineers we have in this class. Check out my web page Pictures tab to see some of these great engineering phenomenons!
We have a few special events coming up....
FRI. 2/7-Report cards will be sent home.
WED. 2/12-Mrs. Pepin's class leads school wide assembly. We are currently working on this and will spend a few days coming up with a script and then practicing for our big debut.
FRI. 2/14-JUMP ROPE FOR HEART/WINTER FUN DAY!
We are working on a schedule for the day but it looks like we won't have enough snow for sledding. :( So we will be decorating our valentine's bags and having a read aloud by Mrs. Donnell and & Mrs. Trafton. Our JRFH will be at 10;45-12:15 in the gym. Please make sure your student has their sneakers, forms and a water bottle that day!
FRI. 2/14-VALENTINE'S DAY PARTY-Our valentine's day party will be held at 1:30 on Friday. We will play some games, have a snack and exchange valentine's during this time. I sent home a list of students in the class for your child to make or buy a valentine for. If you have any questions, please let me know.
MON.2/17-FRI.2/21-WINTER RECESS-NO SCHOOL
As always if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate contacting me via email or phone.
