Hi Everyone,
Hope you have been enjoying these lovely days of fall. We have been doing great things in Third Grade the past few weeks. In Math we have been working on number stories and multi step number stories as well as working on multiplication facts and division. We will use a variety of strategies to learn multiplication. One we are working on right now is arrays. We also continue to work on telling time to the minute. Not only being able to look at a clock and tell the time but also able to write the hands in once we are given a time. Elapsed time is a skill that all third graders should be proficient at by the end of third grade. They are doing a fine job.
In Writing we are now the Captains of our own Writing. This means that we are all in different place but we are elevating our levels of writing by being aware of starting out with a great lead, using paragraphs, changing the heart of our story, using dialogue and then editing by looking at spelling, punctuation etc. We also have been talking about a great ending. I shared a story I had written about a spaghetti fight as an exemplar. Ask your kids about it!!
In Reading we are picking "just right" books and reading them to the end. We are logging in our reading log(thanks for your help with this!) and we are making predictions and having GRIT(not giving up on a book or when we see hard words).
We went on a fantastic field trip to Old York Historical Society on Thursday and learned what it was like to be a settler back in the 19th century. They focused on what it was like to be a sailor and a farmer in York as those are two of the symbols on our Maine flag, which we have been studying. Check out the pictures on my website to see what fun we had! (Thanks to all the parent chaperones who volunteered to be on this trip--special thanks to Liz Jellison and Jess Regis for some great photos)
