So the past few weeks have been very active for your third graders. We have had several DARE classes with Officer Rooney and we are learning all about following rules and respect, responsibility, honesty and Caring. The students are learning a lot about themselves and their classmates.
We took the Unit 1 math test last week and I will be sending home the corrected tests on Monday. Please review this with your student, sign the form and return it by Friday, October 30th. This will be an important part of your child's portfolio.
In Unit 2 we are focusing on number stories with multiple steps. We will also be talking about area.
In Writing we have chosen a seed story from the many entries we have in our writer's journal and we are taking one and editing and revising it for a final published story. We have talked about leads and how to "hook" our reader into the story by using dialogue, action words, setting, a sound word or a question. Next week we will be working on how to create a strong paragraph.
In reading we are working on understanding what we have read so we are asking questions, like who is in the story?, where are they? and what is happening? Students are recording these things on sticky notes to help them recall what is happening. Next week we will focus on making a timeline through the big events in the story to help students do a retell.
We just took our second spelling test last week and I will be sending home these tests on Monday as well. Most students did very well. The goal is to have them spelling correctly in their writing as well on these tests.
On Friday, October 30th we will have 3 big events happening: In the morning during math we will be doing Pumpkin math. We will need 5 pumpkins. If you can provide a pumpkin please do so and we will do all the dirty work and clean it for you and send it home for you to carve into a jack o lantern! Our Halloween party will from 11:15-12:25 pm. Thank you to all who have signed up to help or donate items. Please make sure that your items are at school no later than 10 am the day of the party. The Halloween parade will begin at 2:30 pm. All parents are invited to view the parade from the gym! Our class will be parading through the school in costume. We will have students change back out of their costumes to ride the busses home.
We have a field trip coming up to York Town Hall on Friday, November 13th. I sent home field trip permissions slips last week. They are on an orange slip of paper. Please sign this slip and send back to school with your student as soon as possible. If you are interested in joining us we welcome volunteers!
There is NO SCHOOL ON WED. NOVEMBER 11TH in recognition of Veteran's Day.
On Monday, November 23rd and Tuesday, November 24th we will be holding student led conferences. I sent a Sign up genius link for sign ups. IF YOU HAVE NOT SIGNED UP FOR A CONFERENCE PLEASE GO TO THIS LINK AND SIGN UP:
Please continue to encourage your student to read each night/morning and to sign their reading log. They are doing a great job reading and keeping track but every little reminder helps!
I think that is all the reminders/updates for now. As always if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate
