Hi Everyone,
Well our March is off to a fast start. We've all been working hard on a few things here in third grade and I think you will be surprised during conferences at what your students have been accomplishing! In math we just finished up our Unit 7 math unit on multiplication and extended multiplication facts and we will be taking a unit test on Monday, March 16th. Our next unit, Unit 8 will be all about fractions. This is a challenging concept for third graders but we will make it fun! Please encourage your child to study their multiplication facts at home. This week I will be sending home a form for parents to sign confirming that students are studying their facts. Like anything, repetitive practice will help students learn these facts so that they can automatically recall them. As we move into multi digit multiplication this will be very helpful if not imperative for them to know. We continue to do weekly multiplication tests, some mixed practice and some single digit only.
In Writing, we are finishing up our non fiction books and they are wonderful! I can't wait for you to see the finished product. Students have worked extremely hard on these books and they will get to share them with one another in class, with you during their conferences and with some second graders in the next few weeks. We will be moving on to persuasive writing after this and then our mystery stories starring our Maine animals!
Speaking of Maine animals we are working very hard on a Google slides presentation on a Maine animal currently. We have 5 groups of approximately 4 students researching a variety of animals from Maine, such as: the racoon, the wasp, the Atlantic puffin, the red fox, and the cardinal. Don't forget Maine Animal Dioramas are due MONDAY-March 16th!!! We will finish these up by the last week of March and on Wednesday, March 25th from 2:00-2:30 pm, we invite you to come view these remarkable presentations in your child's classroom. You will get to view the presentations, see their incredible dioramas and talk to the students and ask them questions about what they know and what they have learned. We can't wait! See you there! By the way, we are supporting the Center for Wildlife for a service learning project, so save your pennies as we will be asking for donations at the door! We hope to raise enough money to adopt an animal(provide food and blankets for an animal in need). We also are expecting a visit from the Center for Wildlife in the near future!
On Monday March 9th and Tuesday March 10th all seven third grade classrooms participated in celebrating Maine's birthday(which is Sunday, March 15th) We made lobster hats, tasted maple syrup, played a ME trivia game, made a ME collage, learned about our state flag, made Maine commercials(you'll get to see these on Maine night--read below for more details....) and learned about Acadian culture. A lot of fun was had and kids learned a bunch about our great state-Maine! We had some special ME treats, whoopie pies and blueberry muffins and on Friday, we sang Happy Birthday to Maine and had an assembly for the whole school. Ask your student what activity they liked the best. Watch the CRES webpage for pictures of our fun day!
Our Maine Animal research has taken a bulk of our reading time, reading non fiction books on our animals. However, we are still encouraging reading fiction books at home. So keep reading! We have learned a lot about non fiction and just recently took an assessment on text features which all students did really well on. We will be moving on to characters and book clubs in the next week or so.
A couple of dates to keep in mind. Friday, March 20th report cards will be sent home. Friday, April 3rd NO SCHOOL-Student led conferences. If you haven't already signed up for a conference, please do so, by going to the link

Thursday April 30th--Maine Night--All third graders will perform at 6 pm in the CRES gym.
Check out my pictures tab for a pic of some students during indoor recess(too cold!) team "building".
I think that's it for now. I'm happy to see some of the white stuff melting! As always, if you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate contacting me via email or phone call. [email protected]
