Happy Holidays everyone! The kids are getting excited. They have been doing a great job of staying focused. My Elf on the Shelf has been keeping them entertained and we are looking forward to a fun filled week before the merriment. Here's a few things we've been up to:
MATH:
Yesterday we took the Unit 3 math assessment, which covered fractions and converting cm to mm etc. In our next unit, we will be moving into multiplication strategies and double digit multiplication before we leave for the holidays--any help you can give your fourth grader in practicing their multiplication facts now and during the holiday break would be extremely helpful.
WRITING: Your kids are working really hard on their personal essays and they are doing well.(losing two academic days to snow days put us pretty far behind). They are writing them about specific people in their lives and giving them as gifts to them. You will be happily surprised at what they have to say! Thank you to some parents who have volunteered to help us out early next week to get these done! We will continue writing essays, but persuasive ones, when we return from the holiday break.
READING: We started a new unit in reading after wrapping up our character unit. We will be working with non-fiction and are learning how to research so that we can research and report out on a specific weather disaster. Students will have a choice about how they would like to do this and I am hoping to have a few new technological options for them as well as they can create a poster if they would like. This will be a group project so we will be learning how to work with a team and to divide the work and to all contribute to the final product.
We continue to find good fit books and of high interest. The students really love to read and so I try to give them many opportunities during the school day. However, reading at home is also equally beneficial, so any encouragement you can give them would be helpful. I know I look forward to this time as I love to read holiday books(or any books for that matter!) When my girls were younger they truly enjoyed sitting down together in the evenings and reading a holiday story. Enjoy these moments.
We will be watching the movie Wonder on Thurs. 12/19 after we finish reading the book this week. The students are very excited about this. I am planning on providing hot chocolate for them as well.
On Fri. 12/20/19-We will be having our holiday party from 11:30-12:30 and our book exchange. The kids are very excited about this. I will be making mini chocolate chip muffins and I will be bringing in grapes. We will play some games and do a craft. If anyone would like to join us, please feel free to stop by. At 2:15 on 12/20/19 we will be having a school wide assembly with carol singing and other student performances. You are welcome to join us there as well.
Thanks for sending in coats, boots and hats and mittens. Your students are better for it. We have recently had a case of the flu in 4th grade so wash your hands and keep warm and dry.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to email me or call. I hope that you and yours have a safe and happy holiday season. Enjoy!
Tracy
