Well we certainly have had some unlikely fall weather these past few glorious days! We have had extra recess every day except for a couple of rainy days. The students really look forward to this, and it makes for better concentration and focus. I appreciate all of you signing up for a student led conference which are coming up in a week or so. You should be getting a reminder email from me about the time of your conference.
Math
In math we are working on multiplication and some geometry. We will be taking the Unit 2 assessment, next Friday, November 1st. I will be sending a review home with them the night before so that they can study. Unit 3 will be all about fractions and decimals. I have some excellent picture books that I will be using to help with some of the concepts of fractions and decimals.
Spelling
In spelling we are working on long i words and also there, their and they're. We have reviewed how some blends sound differently when we say them, (ie. qu sounds like K). I am encouraging students to look at their writing as though they were reading it in a book to check their spelling.
Writing
We are working hard on our realistic fiction stories. We are hoping to "publish" them by conference time but we will have something to show you either way. We have been talking about the "heart" of our story as well as working on revision and looking at our writing again. Students have been learning about quotation marks and where to insert dialogue to make their stories more interesting. We will talk about endings and editing next week before we jump into typing our stories. Next up we will be writing a personal essay!
Reading
Reading seems to be your students favorite subject which is inspiring since it is one of my favorite things to do. Students have been book shopping and choosing good fit books and I have been conferencing with them individually and in small groups to talk about strategies to improve their reading fluency and comprehension. We have been talking about theories and finding evidence to support our theories of what kind of person our characters are. I'm asking students to dig deeper to really look into their character's personality and to infer deeper meaning from the text. The expectation is that students should be reading at least 20 minutes per night at home and writing a sticky note about their reading. This helps with comprehension as well as gives us talking points during the classwork time. Thank you for your support with this.
Halloween!
The Halloween parade will be held at 2:15 pm on Wednesday, October 30(next Wednesday). Parents are welcome to go to the CRES gym as we will be parading through with the whole class in costume. If you'd like to join us at some point during the day in class you are most welcome. We will be doing some Halloween math from 10:30-11:30 and then a ghostly writing activity from 11:30-12:30. At 1:30 students will get into costume and then we are playing some Halloween games and rotating through Ms.Divencenzo's and Mr. Carter's classrooms. At 2:15 we will begin parading. When we return there will be a Halloween snack and a Halloween read aloud to enjoy! Please remember that your child's costume should be easy to put on and take off and no weapons or gruesome makeup is allowed.
