Hi everyone,
I guess it has been awhile since I wrote but with all the snow days we've had it's been hard to get all our work done! This five day week this week has been a blessing as we have had some consistency and some opportunity to accomplish much! Students took the Unit 6 math test yesterday which consisted of geometry concepts, terms and figures. I will be sending these home this week for you to review. We will begin Unit 7 on Monday which includes multiplying two digit numbers and division. Please practice multiplication facts with your students as this will help them as we work through this unit.
In reading we have been working hard on our non fiction unit. We will take a text features quiz this week using our math student reference book. Students have really enjoyed learning facts about different subjects and finding the main idea and supporting details in a non fiction excerpt. This has gotten them ready to start their Maine animal research. Yesterday I told them what animal they had and what group they were in. I also, gave them a paper on the Maine Animal Diorama project, which is to be completed at home. They all were very excited about it. This project is due March 16th so don't wait until the last minute! We will be talking about reading partners and characters in the next few weeks. Students should be writing sticky notes when they are reading their books in anticipation of discussing what they read with a reading partner.
In writing we are working hard on our non-fiction books. This has also gone hand in hand with our non fiction unit. They are coming along and some students are in the editing and revising stage. I am looking for a few volunteers to type some of these books for their final drafts. This can be done at school or at home and then emailed back to me. Whatever works best for you. Please let me know if you are willing to type one or two of these masterpieces!
In Science, as I have mentioned we are starting to do research for our Maine Animal projects which will be a presentation using Google slides. We have prepared for this by doing an All About Me google slides presentation in the Computer lab. We will be taking a Maine Animal quiz on Monday, March 2nd. We reviewed on Friday and I sent home the review for students to study from.
We had a fabulous Winter Fun Day and valentine's day party the day before winter break. Check out the Cres home page to see a video from that day. It was too cold for me to take my gloves off to take pictures but we all had a fantastic time!
Some Upcoming dates and events for you to mark on your calendar:
Monday, March 9 Maine's Birthday Celebration
Tuesday, March 10
The entire third grade celebrates Maine's birthday by rotating through each third grade classroom. We will make lobster hats, learn about the state flag & seal, learn about maple syrup and Acadian culture. Students will also create a Maine "commercial" which you will be enjoying during our annual ME Night Celebration-Thurs. April 30th at 6:15 in the gym.
If you would like to volunteer to help with Maine's birthday, please contact me.
Friday, March 13th-Second Trimester ends
Friday, March 20th-Report cards go home
Friday, March 20th-Maine Animal Museum in the front pod classrooms
Friday, April 3rd-Spring Conferences.
I will be sending a Sign up genius out soon to sign up for Spring conferences.
Don't forget to have your student read 25 minutes a night! They are becoming such powerful readers, this practice is crucial for them to grow.
I think that's it for now! Thank you for sending your children with appropriate and warm snow gear. We will be wearing that for awhile, I'm sure! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate contacting me.
Thanks and enjoy your weekend. (I hear we have more snow coming.....)
