This will be my final newsletter blog of the year. We are fast approaching the final days of third grade. I hope that you and your child will have fond memories of third grade as I do every year. This has been a wonderful group of kids whom I've had the chance to know and love over the past year. It is always bittersweet saying good bye and passing them over to their fourth grade teachers. They are ready, but sometimes I am not. That's why we have summer vacations so that we teachers can adjust to seeing them as fourth graders! I hope that they will stop by the classroom as often as they like next year to say hello and check in!!
We finished Unit 9 in math last week and took the Unit 9 test. It is corrected and we put it into the students portfolios which were sent home last week o for you to view. We will be playing some math games tomorrow as it is always good to keep as much structure to our final days as we can.
In Writing we finished our second adapted fairy tale. The students are having so much fun adapting a classic fairy tale, using their imaginations. I have read several fairy tales to them so that they are immersed in the genre and have a sense of how these stories "go" so that they then can write one. I will send home their final copies with them tomorrow.
In Reading we are continuing with Reasearch book clubs and your students are really having some wonderful conversations. Your child has made fantastic progress this year. Don't let the summer "slump" happen, encourage your child to continue to read over the summer. Take them to the York Public Library or check out your own bookshelves! Or even have a book club with them. I will be sending home a list of books and book series that your child can check out this summer if they don't know where to start in picking out books. Just encourage them to read!
I am still looking for books from my own library so take a look around, under beds and on shelves to see if you have any other books out there. Thanks!
We had our last spelling test this past Friday and most children did very well. I will not be sending home any official spelling lists but we will be continuing to work on spelling skills that still need some work. Specifically suffixes and possessive tense.
In Science we are trying to squeeze in talking about some weather related disasters etc. into our final days. We have started talking about what makes the weather. Also why the weather might be different in different parts of the world. This has led to some great discussions. We just finished a realistic fiction book about Hurricane Katrina and the students are really interested. Keep tuned in!
We had some beautiful weather for Beach Day last week and for Field Day. Thank you to all of those parents and helpers that made each day special. The kids really enjoyed themselves. Step up day was very exciting and the students are all very pleased with their new teacher assignments for next year.
Monday, June 20th- Final school assembly.
Tuesday, June 21st-Half Day -Dismissal at 12 noon. Please know what your child's after school plans will be and communicate them to me via note.
Thanks for a wonderful year. I will miss you and your children. Have a happy summer!!
