I'm hoping this post finds you all enjoying a beautiful Memorial Day weekend, which for me always means the beginning of summer. It is hard to believe that there are approximately three weeks left of the school year and your sweet third graders will be moving on to fourth grade! It has been a tremendous year but I won't go into all my ramblings quite yet, as I have a final post to post in the next couple of weeks or so. For now let me fill you in on what is coming up for school and class events and what we have been doing in class.
In Math we have just finished our Unit 8 math assessment. I have almost finished correcting them along with a cumulative assessment. I will not be sending this exam home but will be putting it directly into your child's portfolio so when they bring it home at the end of the year, you may review it with them. We have begun Unit 9 which is our last unit. There are only a few lessons in this unit so my hope is to be finished with the unit and assessing by Friday, June 10th. Homework will be lighter after that, if I send any at all. I am still trying to keep their skills up etc.
In Reading we are beginning Research Book Clubs. We have just finished up our other book club books and students have been discussing what they have been reading about, including character traits, what problems characters face and how they resolve them. We also compared two books that they read and the characters in each book. In Research Book clubs we will be learning how to take notes and choosing an animal that they want to learn about.
In Writing we have written one Adapted Fairy tale and we will have begun another. Students are using a well known fairy tale and then making changes to them. They are very creative. This is fiction writing and they are enjoying it. Wait until you read some of their ideas! The first ones are posted on the door outside our classroom.
We had an awesome field trip right in the back of CRES last week when the staff of White Pines came to our school. They taught us some really neat things about what the Native American people of Maine would have done for games, shelter(we helped build a wigwam!!), food--(did you know that you can eat cat of ninetails?) and we helped simulate building a fire--well we made some smoke! It was a great hands on experience and went very well with our curriculum.
Here are some upcoming dates to keep in mind:
Friday June 10-Third Grade Beach Day-
a Signup Genius will be sent out shortly for parents to sign up for various things, including running activities etc. This is a parent run event so it is important that you are involved as it will be as good as you want to make it!!
Tuesday June 14-Math In/Read A Thon-we will have a morning full of fun math games and will have some reading activities and silent reading in the afternoon.
Wednesday June 15-Second Grade Field Day-our class will be help run Second Grade Field day during our normal PE time.
Thursday- June 16-Third Grade Field Day
Mrs. Brault will be looking for parent volunteers to help with the various stations. Also to fill and bring in approximately 3 dozen water balloons.
Friday-June 17-Step Up Day-students will find out who their fourth grade teachers are this day.
Monday-June 20-End of Year Assembly-we will have our end of year assembly in the afternoon to recognize certain students and staff as well as say good bye to our fourth graders.
Tuesday-June 21-Half Day-Dismissal at Noon-Final Day of School.
Just a reminder, please look around your child's bedroom and household for any books that might belong to the Jane A. Stephenson library or my classroom library and return them as soon as possible! Thank you!
I think that is it for now. I just sent out a list of dates for volunteers for the end of the year. I will email you with specific times. Please remember to sign up for Beach day activities and Field day activities. It really makes the days go really smoothly for our kids with your help!
Thanks again for reading. As always, thanks for letting me have your kids. They are so fun and teach me things every day. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me via phone or email.
Enjoy your weekend!!
