I hope that you all have been enjoying this amazing fall weather. We have been busy in third grade. We have set up our classroom promise and strive to fullfil those promises daily. We are settling into routines and learning from each other each day.
We are finishing up our first math unit. We have focused on multiplication, mass and elapsed time. We will be having a Unit 1 math test on Thursday October 15h. Our next unit will be focus on number stories with both multiplication and division as well as fractions. Please have your student practice their multiplication facts at home. The fact triangles that I sent home with them last week should be a good starting place for them to practice, however you may use computer games, flash cards etc. for them to improve their automaticity.
During writing we continue to work on our personal narratives. As you must know by now(your student should have shown you!) I sent home writing journals so that families could help students with their people and place ideas section to think of small moments with people and small moments/memories of places that they have been.
We had our first spelling test on Thursday. Most students did very well. Students do need to study their spelling words and be comfortable spelling these words in their writing. Their spelling words can be found in their yellow folder in their blue spelling workbook. Please help them remember to study!
In reading we are making mental movies in our mind to help us understand the story better. We have been picking "just right" books and reading strong, long and fast to improve our stamina. Please encourage your child to read at least 20 mins. per night and have them record and have you sign their reading log. this is part of their homework!! It is extremely important that students not only read in school but at home to improve their reading.
I was able to complete some testing on students' reading this week while a guest teacher was in my room. One student that I was working with and had asked a question of had a remarkable comeback! "Well, that is a most fascinating question, I think!" It was a great response and I appreciate his candor.
We had a visit from Melanie, from the Cromwell Center on Disabilities this week. She talked with us about how many people with disabilities have many abilities. You would be very proud of your children and how empathetic and informed they were on this subject. Over the next few weeks we will be having a York Police officer come to our classroom to talk with us and be part of the DARE program. We will talk about a variety of subjects, including drugs, alcohol, bullying/teasing and smoking.
Also coming up is our Town Hall Field trip which will be happening on Friday, November 13th. I will be sending a permission slip out shortly.
Another upcoming event is Student led conferences. These happen on Monday(evening) November 23rd and Tuesday(all day) November 24th. Please be on the lookout for a Signup Genius to sign up for a conference for you and your child to attend.
Lastly, it would be greatly appreciated if you could please send in a note with your child if they are going to be going to a different destination than normal. Even if it is a repetitive location it is important in case there is a guest teacher or I am out of the classroom. I may know your child's schedule but the guest teacher will not know. This is for the safety of your child. I really appreciate it. Thank you! That's all for now! I hope you and your families have a relaxing Columbus Day weekend.
