Hi Everyone,
Welcome to third grade. Thanks to everyone who took the time to attend the Open House this past Thursday, Sept. 23rd and to learn more about the day in the life of a third grader. Here's a little bit of what we have been doing in the past few weeks.
First and foremost we have been getting to know one another. We have been busy learning names, routines and creating a classroom promise. We have been figuring out how to choose our lunch, pass in homework and where everything is at CRES. We have been working as a TEAM-(together everyone achieves more) and we have found out how we learn best.
We are moving right along in Everyday Math. This first unit reviews many concepts that your child was exposed to in second grade. To help your child, review addition and subtraction facts with them. They should have automaticity in facts 1-10 at this point and should be able to do these quick facts in their head. This will help build the foundation for the work we will be doing for the rest of third grade. If they have addition and subtraction mastered have them start practicing multiplication facts, 0, 1, 5 and 10 to begin. We will practice the other facts throughout the year.
In Writing we are composing a Personal Narrative or true story from the student's own life experience. They will choose one of the many entries that they have started in their Writer's Notebooks(by the way they decorated them so nicely with all the picture you sent in!! Thank you! And special thanks to Jen Jancovic and Jess Regis for helping that day!) to revise, edit and publish. We are working on using a "storyteller's voice" right now. Next week we will talk about goals for writing, spelling and editing as we go and choosing one of the ideas to expand and write and publish.
In Reading we have tried hard to build our stamina over the past few weeks. This is sitting in one place, eyes on the page, not talking and reading for as many minutes as we can. They have done well, but we are continuing to increase our minutes each day. We also talked about building a reading life--finding comfy spots to read at home and routines around reading and filling out their reading logs. You can help by encouraging them and also initialing their reading log each evening or morning. We will continue to build routines this next week and talk about sharing books we read with partners and partner reading.
We will be going on a field trip to the Old York Historical Society the third week in October--more details to come in a flyer that I will send out next week. I'll be looking for a few volunteers to walk with us from CRES to Jefferd's Tavern in the center of town. We will be going on Thurs. 10/20 if you'd like to join us, let me know.
Also we will be having the Cromwell Center join us in the beginning of October for a talk about students with all kinds of abilities and how we can respect and help them be part of our school community.
We also will be scheduling the DARE program for third grade where two York Police officers will be teaching students lessons on good healthy, lifelong habits to keep them safe and healthy.
I think that is all for now. Please remind your student to bring their red reading book bag with their book in it, reading log and yellow home/school folder to school each day. We use these each day and it is challenging for your child to be without them.
Thanks for partnering with me to make your student's year a success. I look forward to seeing you in class as a volunteer or as a chaperone on a field trip. I will be sending out a SignUp Genius in a few weeks to schedule November conferences.
That's all for now! Have a safe and fun Fall weekend!
Tracy
