Well I don't know about you but the sunshine and warmer weather has really had a drastic improvement on my mental state! I think everyone is relieved that Spring has finally come!
We've been very busy in third grade the past few weeks. I thank all of those parents who were able to attend your child's student led conference. It is very empowering for them to be able to show their work and to set goals and see what things they have accomplished already! Thanks for your support.
In math we are working on Unit 9 which is multi digit multiplication as well as extended fact multiplication. Knowing those multiplication facts will help your child. Please help/remind them to practice at home. Even a few minutes a day will do wonders. Many students had math goals that included learning their multiplication/division facts with automaticity. We will focus on x6, x7 & x8 next.
In Writing we continue to work on persuasive letters. We are talking about editing as we go, being aware of punctuation etc. We also are learning of how to speak to our audience and we will be working on leads this week. Our next big writing project will be creating a mystery starring our own Maine Animal(a bit of fantasy writing). We will start those after the spring break.
In Reading we are also working on mysteries. We read The Great Steamboat Mystery to get familiar with mysteries and then filled in a Detective Case report to keep track of clues and suspects. We also worked on mystery vocabulary to be familiar with what we would be reading and noticing in mystery books. Your child should be reading a mystery book at this point. If they have already finished one they need to fill out a detective case report for their mystery. We will be discussing them as I am conferring with them.
In Social studies we did a great activity in the pod last Friday. Students were paired with another student from Mrs. Ring's or Mrs. Welock's class and then were given a chromebook and a date of an event in history to research. They wrote a brief description of it and then drew a picture. We posted these up in a timeline format in our hallway. Check it out! It looks amazing! We even have when Mr. Murphy was born! We will continue to talk about Early Maine and Native American life in Maine.
Please don't forget some important dates:
Friday April 17-Career Day and Enrichment day
Mon. 4/20-Fri. 4/24-Spring vacation-NO SCHOOL
Thurs. 4/30-MAINE NIGHT CONCERT 6:30 pm in CRES gym. All families invited. Your student must wear their purple shirt. If you are not sure where that is, please start looking & let me know!
No snow pants and gear is needed any longer--thank goodness but it is still a bit mucky and muddy on the back fields, it may be a good idea to still wear mud boots for the rest of this week. Hopefully when we get back from vacation it will be all dried up!
As always if you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to email me or call me. The year is flying by, pretty soon we will be getting these kids ready to move on to fourth grade--sigh!
All the Best,
Tracy
