I wanted to thank all of you who were able to make it to the Open House on Thurs. 9/24. I appreciate your attention and dedication to your children. They are a great bunch of kids and I have enjoyed getting to know them better over the past few weeks.
We are off to a great start. We are working on telling time to the 5 minute mark as well as the minute mark and elapsed time in Everyday math as well as Tally Charts and Bar graphs. Next week we will look to working more with multiplication strategies and some simple division. Please check in with your child while they do their homework and if you have any questions, feel free to email me.
In Writing we are working on different strategies to use to generate ideas. We have talked about thinking about a person and listing small moments that we have spent with that person and then choosing one and writing about it. We will do the same type of strategy planning with places and things. This will lead to writing and revising and editing a personal narrative.
In Reading we are working on building our stamina(staying put while having our eyes on the page and reading the whole time) We are also picking just write books. Next week we will focus on the reading log and talk about the responsibility of brining books back and forth from school to home and back again. Any help that you can lend around this habit would be much appreciated. We will have a number of discussions regarding the reading log. For the first few weeks, if you could remind your son or daughter to have them bring you the reading log to sign that will help establish good routines and habits and also hold them accountable for their reading.
We are learning all about maps in Social studies. We have read Me on the Map and created some maps of our street, our home and our bedrooms. We did mapping centers talking about world maps and continents, using map grids and we even read about maps and created a map of our classroom. We will work on painting a globe soon as well as studying a map of Maine.
For the next few weeks during our computer lab time on Friday, we will be taking the Star assessment in Reading and in Math. These assessments are designed to determine what things your students already know and what things we still need to teach. I will use these assessments to guide my instruction over the next months in third grade. Please ensure that your student is trying their best, without stressing them out. It is also beneficial to have them get a good night's rest the night before and eat a healthy breakfast.
As always if you need to speak with me about any concerns or questions you may have, please don't hesitate emailing me or calling me. Have a great weekend.
