What a beautiful weekend it has been! I hope you have been enjoying some outside time while preparing for the upcoming holiday. We've been doing lots of preparation as well, in our classroom for the upcoming student led conferences. Hopefully, at this point you have received a reminder email from me to confirm the date and time of your conference. If you have not please let me know. Or you can access this website to see when you signed up. Your student should accompany you to the conference as they will be leading you through the wonderful work they have done in their portfolio.
We just finished up Unit 3 in Math and had our Unit 3 math test this past Thursday. I'm hoping to have them all corrected so that they can be included in the portfolios. This unit was primarily focused on measurement to the closest 1/4 inch, perimeter and area. Our next unit which we will begin after the Thanksgiving holiday will be all about multiplication and division strategies.
In Writing we have been working on writing our reflections for our portfolios as well as the finishing touches on our personal narratives. We will be starting a new unit on non fiction after the Thanksgiving break.
Reading has been going very well with many students reading over 100 minutes every week! The standard 20 minutes will be increasing after the first of the year to 30 minutes per night so they are practicing to build their stamina. We have been discussing characters and predictions these past few weeks. Ask your student what a prediction is and see if they can share a sticky note from their own book of a prediction that they have made.
We have been practicing contractions in Spelling and also using or and ore in words. Students are doing well spelling the words each week but now a goal should be to spell the words correctly in their writing and other areas. We will plan to take our Unit 5 spelling test after the Thanksgiving break.
In Science we have been talking about force. Unbalanced forces, pushes and pulls and friction. We even had an example of unbalanced forces in PE as Mrs. Brault let us play tug of fun to simulate it!! We will be moving on to magnetic forces in the upcoming weeks.
Although the weather has taken a balmy turn, being a born New Englander, I know it will not last. In saying that please remind your students to bring hats, mittens or gloves and a warm coat or jacket to wear outside. We almost always go outside for recess and it is very breezy on the back field. Please ensure that your child has the appropriate cold weather gear to be outside. Thank you.
I wish you all a safe and wonderful holiday season.
