It's hard to believe that November is here and conferences and Thanksgiving are only weeks away! We have had such beautiful weather! We have been doing really well in third grade, keeping routines and learning about each other.
In math we are about to wrap up Unit 2 and take our Unit 2 test on Monday, November 16th. Our next unit will be focusing on estimating, bar graphs, multi digit addition and subtraction.
In Writing we are wrapping up our Personal narrative unit and students will have a published piece for you to read during conferences. They are currently working on editing. Looking at punctuation, spelling and word choice. We took a side bar a couple of days last week to write about some our Halloween candy to help us learn to use detailed and descriptive words in our writing.
In Reading we continue to talk about predicting. We are looking at the cover of our books before we begin to read, the blurb and the first few sentences of a chapter to see if we can determine who and what the book may be about and what may be the problem in the story. Don't forget to have them fill out and have you sign their reading log!!
Please continue to encourage your children to read every day. Ask them what their book is about and ask them if they have made any predictions about what their character may do or what is going to happen in the story.
We are wrapping up mapping this week by creating a Mystery Island map. Students were asked to outline a shape of a subject they knew a lot about and then add details. They are working hard on these to make them look like great maps.
We will be starting a new Science unit this Friday on Force and Motion and Magnetic Force!
Thank you to all those folks that made our Halloween pumpkin math and Halloween party awesome! We all had such a great time! (See pictures posted on the picture portion of my web page!)
Thank you also to all those parent chaperones that attended the Town Hall field trip this past Friday, November 13th. We had great weather to walk to the town hall and then learned some interesting facts about map making and the vault at Town Hall.
Please remember that we will be holding student led conferences on Monday, November 23rd and Tuesday November 24th. You will get a reminder email from SignUp Genius a few days before your scheduled conference. Your child MUST attend the conference as this is their opportunity to show the growth they have made over the past several months and to celebrate their learning.
There is NO SCHOOL on Tues. Nov. 24th
Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the Jane Stephenson Library at CRES from Mon. 11/16-11/23.
Please remember to return your blue school folder to school.
I think that is it for now. If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please feel free to email me or call me. I look forward to seeing you and your child at conferences.
