Hello Families! My hope is that everyone is enjoying their weekend and that the sun will come out soon! It always amazes me that the year goes by so fast, it seems like just yesterday these kiddos were being dropped off in September and now we are about to send them on a tour of the middle school!
Thank you to all who attended a spring student led conference with your child. It is always great to see how proud they are and how much they have grown as students in such a short period of time.
MATH: In math we will be finishing up Unit 7 this coming week and taking a Unit assessment on WED. 5/8. This unit has been about division. Some of you may not have recognized the method we use as partial quotients, but ask your students to teach you, rather than you teaching them your tried and true way of long division. They have an understanding of place value so it makes sense to them. I WILL be having math morning this Tuesday 5/7, so we will be working on this, if you'd like to send your child in at 8 am. Also Unit 8 is our last unit of math.
WRITING: In writing we will be working on Immigration Journals as we will be starting that unit this week. This is a very fun unit that all the students seem to enjoy. It culminates in Immigration Day-which will be held on Friday, JUNE 7th. We will be looking for volunteers to make this day a success--more to follow on that! Also, as part of this unit we will be taking a field trip to the Lowell, Mills, in Lowell, MA on Tues. 5/21. A field trip slip came home last week describing the experience. If you could please send back the signed permission slip with the $10 fee, that would be most appreciated. If you'd like to volunteer as a chaperone for this trip, please let me know asap.
READING: For the last part of the year I am trying something different. I have just recently been in a professional book club and have made a decision to NOT use a reading log for the remainder of the year. The class and I have had some excellent conversations around this and I would like to see how it goes. Instead of filling out a log each week, students now will be writing me a letter about their book. There may be specific requirements that they need to include, but mostly it will give me lots of information to talk to them about their book, to see if they are understanding it and what questions they may have. I also will be writing back to them in response. I will be giving them some time in class to do this--during our writing time--and I will be teaching them how to construct an appropriate response. All in all, it seems to have been well received. I look forward to seeing what types of data we can gain from this. Please let me know if you have any questions. We will also be working on Historical Fiction as it fits nicely with our Immigration unit.
In fourth grade there are several times that we meet with Middle school counselors, students and staff to get acquainted with them and to introduce your student to the workings of the middle school. Here are some dates to know about upcoming events. I will also be sending out a calendar base with these dates marked so you can have a hard copy. Please let me know if you have any questions. I want to take this opportunity to tell you all that it has been my pleasure and privilege to be your child's teacher this year. They have taught me to be a better teacher and you should be proud of the young people they are becoming. I look forward to seeing all the bright and beautiful things they will do in the future. Thank you!
