Halloween is approaching and with it party planning and costume designing. We have been hard at work in fourth grade, learning our multiplication facts, practicing Reflex math, writing Realistic Fiction stories, reading great books and learning to have stamina when reading and we also have been talking about erosion in Science. Here's a few highlights to get you up to speed...
MATH:
Hopefully you had a chance to review the Unit 1 Assessment with your child. Thank you for returning them so they can be part of your child's conference portfolio. We have been working on converting time from hours to minutes and vice versa, multi digit subtraction and multiplicative relationships. We will be taking the Unit 2 math assessment on Friday, November 2nd! Please help your child to review for this test.
SPELLING:
Please help your child by using opportunities at home to help them spell correctly. If you are making a grocery list--let them create it, have them help you write steps for getting ready for bed or getting ready for school and have them post them in their room. We also use an online program called Spelling City which I typically assign for homework at least once per week. There are various games and a practice test that they can take. This builds their spelling skills so that they feel confident when spelling during their writing.
WRITING:
We are busy starting to craft our Realistic Fiction story. We have tried out different stories, chosen one and created a story arc with scenes so that we know how the story goes. We will be working on leads(beginnings to "hook" our reader), paragraphing, and using punctuation correctly, like quotation marks for dialogue. The students seem to be excited about their stories. You will see their published stories during conferences in November.
READING:
In reading we have been working on reading with stamina, recording our reading, seeing patterns in our characters behavior and what might cause these patterns. What motivates our character and what does our character struggle with? We have been reading two mentor texts, The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo and Wonder by Patricia Palacio. The students seem to really enjoy listening and discussing these books.
HALLOWEEN:
Our Halloween party will take place on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31ST from 10:15-12:00. We will play some games, do a Halloween craft and also have a Halloween read aloud. The Halloween parade will begin at 12 noon and then students will be dismissed at 12:30 pm as it is a half day inservice day. I have some parent volunteers who will be helping out that day. If you would like to attend the parade or any part of the day, please let me know!
CONFERENCES:
This week I will be sending a SignUp Genius sign up for conferences for the week of 11/13-11/16 and 11/19-11/20. Please take the time to sign up for a 30 minute conference so that you and your student can share what they have accomplished so far and set goals for the rest of the year. If you have any questions, feel free to call or email me.
I am having so much fun with your children. They are sweet and special and I feel so lucky to get the chance to be with them every day!
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to get in contact with me--you may call 363-1800 or email me at [email protected]
