Well it's been quite awhile since I sent my last newsletter but hopefully your students have kept you up to date on all the happenings in Room 102 at CRES! We have been working hard every day and learning new and exciting things. We had a wonderful Holiday celebration in December full of fun games and crafts and then carol singing in the afternoon. I hope that all had a joyful celebration and 2017 is off to a great start!
In Math we finished up Unit 3 which focused on arrays and multiplication and multi digit addition and subtraction. I am hoping you had the opportunity to review it with your student, sign it and return it to school. It will be an important part of their third grade portfolio. We have almost completed Unit 4 which is mostly geometry based. We have talked quite a bit about characteristics of various polygons and also about perimeter and area.
We will be taking the Unit 4 assessment sometime at the end of next week or beginning of the week of 1/23.
In Writing we are continuing to revise our Informational books. We have used expert words for some of our chapters and we have learned to balance facts with ideas this week. We will move onward to add text features to our books as well as checking in on our goals and finally working on an About the Author page.
In Reading we are working on reading non fiction texts. We have compared fiction to non-fiction, looked at text features and also looked at boxes and bullets or the main idea and supporting details. This will help students to be able to take notes and research in the future.
Your students will actually have a chance to do a bit of research in the future beginning with the Maine Animal project. They will be put in a group according to what animal they are interested in and will create a slideshow in which they will provide information that they have gathered about that animal. All work will be done at school. However, there is a second component to this project that they will be completing at home--The Maine Animal Diorama. Stay tuned as information and guidelines will be sent home soon!
We had a whole school assembly yesterday to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday and what he believed in as well as several fun and inspiring songs from your third graders. Check out the photos tab on my website for some great photos of them in action.
As always if you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate contacting me either through email [email protected] or phone 207-363-1800 and I will be happy to get back to you. I feel very blessed at the start of this new year to be working with this amazing group of kids. Thanks for trusting me to be part of their world.
Peace,
Tracy
